IMPROVE ACOUSTICS TO INCREASE THE ATTENTION OF WORSHIPPERS

Date: October 08, 2025

In modern churches, often characterized by smooth surfaces and large windows, sound can become an obstacle to understanding the liturgical message: excessive reverberation makes the celebrant's words confused and difficult to follow, especially for those who are far from the pulpit or have difficulty in hearing. This phenomenon can compromise the participation of the faithful, creating a real barrier to listening.

Acoustic improvement with advanced audio technologies represents the solution to restore clarity to the word of God, through targeted interventions that improve the quality of sound without altering the aesthetics of the sacred building. Today it is possible to design effective and tailor-made solutions, guaranteeing a more inclusive and engaging liturgy for everyone.

THE CASE OF THE CHURCH OF KISHA AND ZOJES RRUZARE IN BISHTAZHIN (KOSOVO)

The parish "Zoja Rruzare" (Italian: Madonna del Rosario) in the village of Bishtazhin, near Gjakova, Kosovo, was founded in 1926. The church has the features of a very large modern building with a circular plan, an airy raised presbytery and a mezzanine on the narthex, which on both sides reaches the presbytery with stairways that follow the perimeter of the church.

The interior is severe, mainly characterized by marble surfaces whose upper portions are made up of large polychrome windows that solemnly illuminate the spaces.

The parish priest, taking up the difficulty of some of his faithful, turned to the Belltron retailer Ysni Balliu for a more effective sound system. After an environmental acoustics analysis, optimal results could be obtained both in terms of benefits and costs. In a large environment like that of the Kisha and Zojes Rruzare, eight 120Watt CA-95 series speakers and two 60 Watt speakers were recommended and installed.

The Belltron speakers of the CA-95 series are a versatile speaker system characterized by good timbral correctness and intelligibility of speech. The design of each appliance always maintains the sober and respectful appearance of the liturgical style.

To meet various power and connection needs, depending on the environment in which it is installed, Belltron produces five models of digital audio amplifiers. The BPA-219 model was chosen for the Madonna del Rosario parish: a mixer, amplifier and digital processor with latest generation DSP. With the Belltron amplifier, by adding nothing to the music or voice signal, the audio remains very close to the original one without distortion. In this way, the emotions suggested by a song or the tone of voice of the speaker maintain the timbre that has been chosen for the faithful.

ADVANTAGES OF A WELL-SOUNDING SACRED PLACE

A church with good acoustics allows all the faithful, regardless of the place occupied, to carefully follow the words of the celebrant. This aspect is even more important for people with hearing or cognitive difficulties, for whom correct diffusion of sound can transform the church into an authentic place of inclusion and welcome.

Investing in the improvement of ecclesiastical acoustics means encouraging a more conscious and profound participation in the liturgy, making the celebration more intense, alive and engaging. It is not necessary to make invasive interventions: thanks to a scientific and targeted approach, it is possible to obtain excellent results, fully respecting the aesthetics, spirituality of the spaces and the economic resources available.
